Morristown criminal defense attorney, Troy L. Bowlin, kept his client out
of prison as the court found the defendant to be Not Guilty by Reason
of Insanity. Just one of the client's felony charges could have meant
as much as 8 years in prison. The charges stemmed from a high speed chase
on which the client led police. These charges were aggravated because
the client had a deadly weapon that she had been waving around. The handgun
found in the client's possession was a 9mm Glock handgun, much like
guns that police use.
The chase took place on U.S. Highway 11E, and reached speeds of 90 to 110
miles per hour. As the client kept going up and down the highway, she
ran red lights and waved a gun outside the window. Officers had to use
"stop strips," one of which deflated the client's right
front tire. After driving on a rim for some time, the client finally came
to a stop. She dropped the gun out the window, but would not exit the
vehicle. The police had to extricate her themselves. Before being taken
to a mental health facility, the client was held in custody at Greeneville
police station.
The client faced charges of reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon
(a Class E felony) and evading arrest in a manner that endangered innocent
bystanders (a Class D felony). If convicted on the count of reckless endangerment,
the client could have been imprisoned for 1 to 6 years and fined up to
$3,000. A conviction of evading arrest could have led to a prison sentence
of 2 to 12 years, and up to $5,000 in fines. Then Hamblen County defense
attorney Troy Bowlin took the case, and his client was never sentenced
to any jail time whatsoever.
